I'm in Vogue's Hair Loss Feature!

Hey folks: this is something I've been gagging to tell you all about for the last month, and I'm so thrilled I now can -- I'm featured in Vogue's incredible feature on life and style beyond hair loss!

Back-story: Vogue contacted me a few months ago about participating in this new feature -- which comprised portraits and video (links above) -- and back in April, I went out to their offices in New York to be photographed by the amazing Cass Bird and styled by their phenomenal team. The series featured a range of incredible women, from cancer patients and survivors to alopecia folks like me. Meeting all these friendly, funny people on both sides of the camera was the most incredible privilege, and I'm still on Cloud 9 frankly. They also asked me if I would do one of my video tutorials on eyebrow makeup, and you can watch it here! (Their camera is a bit fancier than my wobbly iPhone videos on this site, eh?)

I wanted to note that one of these women was 17 year-old Mia Sidaros, a lovely, vibrant aspiring fashion blogger from Los Angeles who was living with a rare form of bone cancer called Ewing’s Sarcoma. Shortly after the shoot, Mia passed away. I'm honored to have got to meet her and her family at the shoot, and the Vogue video interview is dedicated to her memory, which I think is a truly fitting tribute.

I hope to write more about all this in a little while, but in the meantime you can view all of the gorgeous black and white portraits here, watch the video tutorial here and check out the video interview here. I really hope you all like it.

Love, Carly x

  7. Hi, Carly! Thanks so much for the fantastic eyebrow tutorial. That has been such a big issue and loss for me. My hair all fell out two years ago after having my son with no signs of regrowth. I've lost track of how many doctors I've seen (and how much their bills total...). I had awesome, thick, long, curly hair and loved it. Sometimes, I wear a wig, although most of the time, I just rock the bald, especially when it's hot outside. I have two problems: 1) How do I go about finding a wig that looks like me? Not a chop job so short I can't do anything with it or so long it looks contrived. And something that doesn't give me a headache after a few hours. 2) How do I find my face? I don't know what I look like anymore, and I don't know how to put makeup on this blank palette. Where do I start? Cheers, Amanda

    1. Hey Amanda, so glad you enjoyed the brow tutorial! Now, wigs: I am actually NOT a big expert on these. I rocked a wig back when I first lost my hair -- I shaved it all off to take control, and went straight into 3 months of wig-wearing to get me over "the hump." After those 3 months, I realised that as great as it had been as a transitional aid, it just wasn't me -- so I ditched it, and have never gone back. It was in large part a comfort thing, just as you say -- the headaches from the tight elastic were driving me crazy. If a wig is something you really want to persevere with, here's the advice I was given: take your wig in for a haircut (when it's on your head), just as you would you hair. Wigs tend to run "pouffy", and a good hairdresser with experience in these matters will be able to take enough volume off to stop it looking fake. You can also direct them how you want it! Although choosing a good hairdresser is really important here, otherwise you're just paying someone to destroy your expensive wig ;) If you're contemplating moving away from wigs either temporarily or potentially on a longer-term basis, I strongly recommend checking out Suburban Turban online. I know I'm always repping them on this site, and I promise I am not paid to: I just think they're the best there is. I particularly love their "Bea" style, a gorgeous 20s/30s-style cap that I'm forever getting compliments from strangers on. I strongly recommend treating yourself to one (make sure you choose the right size, per the Size Guide on their site) and seeing if you might be a secret hat/scarf person, rather than a wig person. I also have a ton of scarf tying tutorials elsewhere on this site in which you might be interested, and of course make-up ones too. As for your "blank canvas", I would start with your brows and work down from there! I found that being able to get false lashes to stay on my eyelids (totally easy when you know how, my tutorial is here) made me feel like "me" again. Try it yourself and let me know how you get on! And ALWAYS feel free to comment here with more Qs xo

    2. That is fabulous info! Thanks! I have to be honest: sometimes, it is worth going bald because people are kinder and friendlier. When it happened, I started getting the "chemo discount." I was buying shoes one day, and they gave me a friends and family discount. It didn't strike me until I got home that this sweet girl at the register thought I had cancer. I tell people now that I don't, but I love it when people ask me genuinely how I'm doing. I always reply with, "Great! How are you?" I've made friends because of the alopecia. People are afraid their curious kiddos are being rude or awkward, but they're just being kids, and it's mostly okay. I've only had one rude kid. I told him I'm bald, not deaf.

      Delete
    3. Hi Amanda,

I'm glad to hear people were kinder and friendlier, my concern and cowardliness with going bald and rocking it has a lot to do with being afraid of how cruel people can be. I've also feared job interviews and so on.
Either way, your story sheds some hope and light this way, thank you.

As for the kid, I am glad you clarified you're bald not deaf ;)

      Best,
      Michelle

  15. Carly,

It seems from all your work that you are, although it's hard to believe possible, more beautiful on the inside than the outside. I caught an article from you on a different news site, and found your blog via links.

I'm a registered nurse working at Primary Children's Hospital in Salt Lake City, UT. I've worked at our famed Huntsman Cancer Institute as well. Please let me know if you are interested in ever working with one of these fantastic hospitals, and I can help set you up. The kids losing their hair at Primary Children's Hospital could use someone with your talent and your heart. They absolutely LOVE to be doted upon and have people spend time to make their life vibrant.

Again, I think you're absolutely beautiful. I would love to be able to meet you in person someday. Please consider visiting our children's hospital. We could set up a short day workshop or something for the nursing staff to learn and invite some patients to participate. My contact information is Bryce.Garey@imail.org

I stumbled upon your blog. I was so moved by your bravery and vulnerability. I have had alopecia for 25 years. I lost my hair when o was 4 years old. Growing up had its challenging moments. I was lucky to have the love and support of my family and friends. They helped me to love myself for who I am and not to let my hair loss bring down my spirit. I wear a wig not and am not as open with my hair loss as you. I admire your courage. I know you're an inspiration to so many women out there. It is so important to have support while going going through something as emotional traumatizing ad losing your hair. I would love to connect with you some day and chat. You are a women I can relate to on so many levels. I to am a fashionista. I am so happy my hair didn't steer me away from my passion. Thank you again! Hope to connect soon.

  21. Hi Carly.... I was sooooooo excited to find your YouTube videos just now...I had trichotillomania as a very small child of 4....This condition is associated with pulling eyelashes, eyebrows even hair pulling. I was lucky to be able to stop the hair pulling before the damage was done. The damage to my eye lashes and eye brows was already done. I see pictures of my self as a baby with long eye lashes that were long and curly. Growing up and constantly being asked where are your eye lashes are. I atleast could draw on eye brows. As a teen being teased was awful. I never could wear eye shadow because it drew even more attention to my eyes. I have tried over the years to wear false eye lashes. I looked so funny and gave up. Even as 3 days ago giving it a try with failure. I just saw your videos and finally someone who knows my pain. For the first time in my whole 44 years I have hope. I am terribly excited to try out both eye lashes and eye brow. Thank you so much for making these videos so people like myself can feel good walking out the door and feeling pretty and not to worrying if your eye brow wore off on one side etc....You have made my day...This is my first time blogging so I don't know how to comment as so I will put it here..my name is Tracie

    1. Hey Tracie! I'm so glad you found my YouTube tutorials. And I'm even MORE glad you're going to give false lashes a try! I remember finally "cracking" my technique so clearly -- how wonderful and invincible I felt the next morning walking into work with lashes again. Granted, they were probably totally the wrong type, or slightly askew -- but who cares, they were LASHES! I would love to know how you get on with the tutorial -- it may take you a little bit of time to master the technique, but once you have it you'll never lose it. Onwards and upwards! xo

I am a recovering cancer patient, and lost my hair through chemo. Headcoverings have been a mystery to me, until now. Your video is very helpful. I can't wait to try it. And thank you for your article on "what not to say". I can't tell you how many people said, "It's just hair". I can deal with it now, but when my hair was falling out in clumps, it was hard to deal with, even though it was well meant. Mostly, thank you for your attitude and sense of humor. I love it. Don't know how to sign this as something other than unknown. Felicia

    1. Thanks so much Felicia :) Yup, "it's just hair" is super-easy for a hairy person to say, no? I always try and remember that unless they're one of the rare humans on earth who is truly a monster, most people are usually just trying to be helpful when they say things like that. Lord knows I've probably said my share of inadvertently-insensitive things to people in the last few decades! Anyway, I am really glad to hear that you're recovering from your treatment -- and thank you again for taking the time to comment. xo
