Hello everybody!
Just wanted to let you know that even though I haven't updated this blog in a while, I have not abandoned it - in fact, I am checking it regularly and see every one of the the lovely comments and questions you guys post. The reason I don't update it frequently is because I wanted this blog to be a helpful resource of photos, videos and tutorials, rather than one of those 'day-to-day thoughts' kind of blogs (goodness knows there's enough of them out there...), and I feel like this site and my YouTube channel now have most of your bases covered.
If you have any questions about the tutorials or specific products, or even have an idea for a new tutorial that you'd like to see, as always please feel free to leave a comment or message me a bit more privately via my YouTube channel. I love to hear from you all!

Thank you for posting these tips! I am losing my hair due to Hodgkin's Lymphom and have been a little surprised at how much it's bothering me. :-) Your tips are so helpful. :-)
ReplyDeleteI also am thrilled to find your blog and to watch your videos. I am 34 and was just diagnosed with breast cancer and have started chemo. Today, on day 10, my hair is starting to fall out. I don't know why, but that seems to be a really hard part of this whole process. I have a question, what is your black cap made of that you wear under all of your scarves, buffs, etc. Where can I get one?

Hi Kristen - lovely to hear from you, and really pleased you've found this blog helpful. The black cap I wear in the videos is from an online company called Suburban Turban, and the style is called 'Kimmy'. I know that they deliver to many countries outside the UK!

I found your blog today. I wanted to first say you are a beautiful woman and the tutorials you have posted are fantastic! I happened upon your youtube channel and blog while looking for new techniques. I have had trichotillomania for over 30 years and can no longer grow a full set of eyelashes or eyebrows. I am going to try some of your suggestions. I had never heard of the sealer before! That is what I am looking forward to most as my makeup rubs/wipes/sweats off so easily and it creates a huge amount of anxiety! So thank you!

Your tips are amazing and I am very grateful that I found your blog. I am 31years old and have alopecia universilas for the first time in my life. It's been a difficult acceptance period to say the least, but I did my brows up this weekend for the first time and every body thought they grew back! THANK YOU!

Hi Lori, fantastic news about your brows! Really happy these tips are working well for you. AU is a big thing to cope with at any age, but there's so much you can do with scarves and makeup to make sure you still feel like 'you'. I will be starting chemo soon and I am so happy that I found your you tube channel. I have never seen a more natural eyebrow than the one you demonstrated! The ruffled head scarf that you are wearing in the eyebrow video is adorable, where did you buy it? Thank you again!

As for that Buff, I've scoured the US and UK Buff site and I'm afraid I just can't find that colour Buff anymore, which leads me to think they've discontinued that particular style... But the good news is that I saw many beautiful new colours on those sites, many of them in purple - so I hope you still find something you like on there! I love how you tie the scarf with an elastic, and I also love the buff idea! Super easy, and super cute. Being a teenager make-up obviously plays a huge role in my life and its great to have videos which I can watch over and over again until I'm able to get the knack of it! As a 47 year old Mum I haven't had to think too hard about eyebrow makeup for ages, but thought I had better get myself prepared!. I came across your You Tube tutorial on how to apply eyebrows. It was fantastic!!. I don't feel quite so daunted on what I will need to do so a huge thankyou!

ReplyDeleteI was curious what brand of eyelashes you buy? I bought a cheap pair from the store yesterday and tried them on for the first time this morning to wear to work. I lost the nerve not knowing if they truly looked ok or if they would fall off during the day so I wore a hat for more comfort :) Anyway yours seemed more shaped for your eye than the ones I have seen at the stores.
Thank you for your videos. I have alopecia and now starting to lose my eyebrows and eyelashes. I have never been in to make up that much so really struggle with proper ways to put it on ....but being 36 and losing my "beauty hair?" just makes it so much more important for me to wear make up and feel pretty again....and find my inner confident self.
I don't know what your story is but you have been an inspiration to me and my daughters who watch me struggle with this.

I've actually got a whole eyelashes section on the site, at http://eyelineher.blogspot.com/search/label/eyelashes - there, you'll find all my tutorials and details about the products I wear. For eyelashes, I prefer the Ardell brand that you can buy at Boots (if you're in the UK) or Walgreens (US). My tutorials will also give you an idea of how to shape them so they actually stay on your eye!

ReplyDeleteI was just curious how long you have alopecia? I too have it and now have lost almost all eyelashes and eyebrows...taking one day at a time :) I do realize that everyone's experience is different. No one I know has experienced this before so at times can be a bit overwhelming and hard for people to relate. Anyway just curious how many years you have had it and if you have had any growth? I have growth on my head but its kind of funny as it of course is little patches here and there. I have purchased a buff and just ordered 3 hats from Surbanturban. The buff came today and the hats should arrive very soon. So excited to get them!
Alopecia can be a very scary and hard time....I really find your info extremely helpful so thank you.

Hey again Carly! I've had alopecia since I was 18, which started off small and got more 'total' over a year - I've had it for 8 years now. For the past couple of years I've been experiencing tiny bits of growth but really nothing to write home about ;) As you quite rightly say, everyone's experience is different so it's tricky to compare - however the one piece of advice I'd give (not that you have to take it!) is to get to a place where you are happy where you are, as you are. What I'm trying to say is: it really helps when you're not making your happiness dependent on your situation changing - at least, that's what's made me happy :)

ReplyDeleteI find there is not much awareness with alopecia and so wish and determind to find a way to make it more known....and excepted. Got to find some inner power with this card that I have been dealt with in life :) If I had the money I would love to have a advertisment prommoting awareness on alopecia and aceptance...maybe on TV? ha ha just dreaming :)
Thank you for the advice... my husband says we should have that plastered on our wall as a reminder when I have a bad day. Maybe make a graffiti wall in our house of inspirtation!
One more thing...where do you purchase your great scarfs? I am sure you have repeated yourself in these posts but easier to just ask lol. I only have one and would love to find some more. I like how it feels like I have long hair again ;) I had long hair and always had it pulled back in a bun or ponytail.

ReplyDeleteI *love* your idea of using your situation to 'spread the word'--that's what I did! I really wanted to find a way to make the best of my circumstances, especially as I was pretty pleased with all the makeup tricks I'd thought of and just couldn't see anywhere else out there that offered the same kind of hard, practical advice. I also got quite frustrated with many of the existing support blogs and sites out there, which (in my humble opinion) were just SO negative. It really didn't put my head in a a 'good place' to read other people pouring out their anger and sadness... I needed some positivity! I hope that's what you'll find here :) It sounds like you have a wonderful family who loves you for being YOU, hair or no hair.
Re: scarves, I used to get my big silk scarves from a UK store called Accessorize--but now I've moved over to the US I haven't actually bought any. What I DO like to do is to put on a small cap (like the Kimmy cap from Suburban Turban) and then tie a long, thin scarf around it like you would a headband, knotting it at the side of my head and leaving the long bits to fall over my shoulder. It's a nice feminine look, and you can find long thin scarves (silk or cotton) in pretty much any department store. Give it a try!

hi, Carly. Everyone must say this, but your knot-free scarf-tying method is ACE. I made a band out of elastic straight away, and am wearing a lovely blue bun as I type. Just one question: would you be willing to tell me where you got your little underneath cap, please? I've had similar things in the last, but not smooth, as yours appeared.

Did you ever experience any of your skin sensation being different? Very hard to explain but sometimes when I happen to rub my scarf on my checks or face (I guess just a habit) and it kind of feel numb or tingly? Again ....very hard to explain. I am just wondering that with the loss of the little hairs on our face being gone that maybe that is why my skin sensation can feel different?
I know autoamuine conditions can be linked so searching the internet can sometimes be scary .....so thought I would ask you :)

Hi! I have AU too and I have the same thing. It kind of feels like your face is numb sometimes. It has to do with the tiny hairs on your face being gone and therefore you're not as sensitive. Don't worry about it, I don't. :) There's so much else to worry about.

And yes, I'd definitely caution against going down the Google rabbit-hole on auto-immune conditions -- you'll come away two hours later convinced that you have about forty competing conditions, all of which are terminal. Just say no! xo

I have always been her hair and makeup guru but really had no idea how to help her style her new and changing self. I'm so glad that I will have your tips in my arsenal. DeleteI've watched your video about recreating eyebrows with makeup several times. It is the best technique I've seen yet for creating realistic looking eyebrows.
ReplyDeleteMy problem is I cannot find an eyebrow pencil that works for me. All the eyebrow pencils (all drugstore brands because that's all I can afford) are too soft. I always get a smudgy look rather than hairstrokes.
I would love to know which eyebrow pencil you use or could suggest for me. I need brown color eyebrow pencil.

ReplyDeleteHey Carly -- sorry for the delay! There's actually a small section elsewhere on this site about this, and you can see it here (scroll down the page to 'Reusing Your Lashes'.) Essentially, you use a (sharp) thumbnail to carefully peel away the dried glue from the false lash base -- it should come away like a thin string. Click here for a close-up pic! :) xo
I bought the Bald Girls Do Lunch brow sealer and it worked okay, but did rub off when I slept (I guess I'm a restless sleeper). Then I left it in a hotel room so I've been looking for something new. Someone on YouTube suggested La Femme sealer, which is only $6. I've ordered a bottle but if anyone else here has been using any sealers that you think are amazing, I'd love to hear about them!
