Video how-to: applying false lashes

As a follow-up to my earlier post on applying false lashes, here's a video that takes you through the process step-by-step, from applying the base eye make-up to 'hide the join' to actually sticking the little guys on. (The reptitive - ie. boring - bits have been sped up for a better tutorial. Saloon-style piano music to follow later...)

  1. You are super pretty! My mother in law is done with chemo but she asked me about her eyebrows. I got super exited because it is the 1st time she asks for makeup advice, I have all the product but I wanted something natural looking for here and your eyebrow and false eyelashes blew me away! your eyebrows look so real!

  3. This was very helpful! I always skipped the curling step, and now I found out why I was never able to put my fake eyelashes on by myself. Thanks!

  4. Hi Fernanda - great news! I was totally stumped re: lashes too until I stumbled onto the curling trick - more people need to know, I think! Let me know if you have any other tricky issues you'd like me to cover :)

  5. Hi Carly - Great tutorial! This was something I had been thinking about doing myself (youtube how-to video). I began wearing lashes about 6 years ago (can't believe it's been that long!) and I have to say I think it is the one cosmetic change that gave me the biggest feeling of femininity. My process is a little different, as I always thought the glue would best adhere to clean dry lids. Do you find you have trouble with the glue lifting? Also, I actually apply a second bead of glue to the lash after it is on my lid and wipe off the excess (quickly!) with a q-tip. Do you ever find the one application of the glue to be inadequate? Great job - can't wait to try your brow technique too!

  6. Hey there! Thanks for commenting - I couldn't agree more about the lashes. I really didn't think I missed them that much until I worked out how to apply false ones properly, and now I cannot be parted from them :) Really interesting to hear that you apply a second layer of glue, I'd never actually considered that. When I first started wearing them I had problems with them falling off all the time, which I eventually solved by making sure my eyelids were very fry and powdered and by pressing the lashes onto the lid until I was sure they'd adhered. I will definitely give your method a try! X

  7. Where do you find that fun eyelash curler...it's not like one I've ever seen and it curls the eyelashes so naturally.

  8. Hi! The curler I use is actually from Boots the Chemist, in the UK - it's dirt-cheap and fantastic (I stock up whenever I go back). However if you're not in the UK (because Boots don't ship internationally), I found this great-looking one on Amazon that looks almost identical. The clamp-style curlers are great because they allow for much greater precision when curling. By the way, I also find that spraying hairspray on the lashes when you curl them makes the curl hold.

Good luck! Let me know how you get on X

    1. I just bought a starter kit today by Kiss called Lash-101. It includes the same little eyelash curler in the package. The kit was $6.99 at Walgreens.

  9. Carly, you're fantastic! I actually stumbled upon you from the Buff website where I was trying to find out how to wear a buff to go running, and saw your tweet on their webpage. I was never excited about false lashes but after seeing your how-to, I think you've given me the confidence I need. Much love to you! - Eva

  10. Thanks Eva! I LOVE false lashes, they make such a difference. Pro tip: if you're having trouble applying the strip, just cut it in half and apply the two halves separately - so much easier! (In fact, I think I may do a video in it...)
All the best to you, Carly x

  11. Hello Carly! Thanks so much for making these amazing videos! I have trichotilomania, so I sometimes pull out my lashes and have to wait until they've grown back. I just started using false lashes for now until the real ones naturally grow back- yes, it's HARD! Thank you so much for your videos!

I have a bit of advice for you, and I hope, if you're interested in trying it, that it helps! My mothers a doctor of chinese medicine, and one of the main herbs that's used for hair re-growth if ginger!

She's had a patient before that had alopecia, and she told them to do this:
Grate fresh ginger until so it's like a liquid with bits of grated ginger. Mix it with sesame oil, and then massage it into the head. You can leave it on for a few hours or over night. For her patient, it helped to regrow the hair (thick and curly and healthy) back in a few months!

I hope that you can try it- I know it helped that patient so much! If you don't mind me asking, is it hereditary? Because that makes a difference in treating it.

I hope to help you as best as I can! I know how difficult it is! I pull our my eyebrows and hair as well, and it takes (with luck) an hour every morning to get ready!

My mom said that Alopecia can be properly treated with herbs, and if you're interested, I can give you suggestions on what my mom says is the right thing to ask for if you wish to try drinking an herbal remedy!

    With love,
    -Angelica

  12. Hi Carly,

Thank you so much for your videos. I haven't had lashes since I was 6- am now 42. I have worn false lashes occasionally and have really been thinking about wearing them daily but my biggest hassle was always taking them off without an ugly eyeliner/glue funkiness that was really tough to remove- What do you do to help with that? My big thing is that I am am dating someone and it's hard to have a sleepover without worrying if my lashes are falling off if I mess around or fall asleep without removing them- I also dread taking such a big chunk of time at bed time to remove them and my make up that is stuck due to the glue. I am guessing you have this too, and I am hoping that since you wear these daily, that you have some good tricks for this!
You are gorgeous!! Your lashes do not look false at all- I am excited to try your tips!!

  13. Hey Annie, thanks for commenting! I know what you mean about 'lash-worry', and sometimes I'll find that one corner has sprung free - but I find the best way of combating this is by carrying around a little tube of Duo lash glue with me everywhere. That way, I can quickly pop to the bathroom, reapply a little glue and press the strip back down again with no problems (the little Duo tubes have a very small nozzle which allows you to be very precise, plus I can now do this without a mirror... much practice!) I also always carry some liquid liner with me, so that if my lashes are a lost cause that night, or I just want to do without them, I can peel them off and reapply some eyeliner over where they were. Making sure that your eyelids are dry and powdered with no moisturizer on them before you apply the lashes in the first place really helps their staying power.

To be honest, I don't find removing these lashes a hassle at all - I just peel them off and gently wash my face (including my eyelids) with a gentle exfoliating cleanser, and the glue comes right off with the rest of my makeup. If I was having a sleepover and didn't want to remove ALL my makeup, I'd probably just gently wipe away my eye make-up and the glue with a facial wipe.

I hope this helps you! Enjoy your lashes, lady xo

  14. I must have been using the cheapy glue- I am going to grab some Duo! Looks like you use the dark glue vs the white/clear? What lashes do you work best? In your video you mentioned you get the cheap lashes- what brand/ style do you typically use because yours look so real! Thanks again!

  15. Hi Annie, I've put all the details on another blog post: http://eyelineher.blogspot.com/2011/02/on-lash-part-two-falsies.html Hope this helps!

  16. Thank you, thank you, THANK YOU Carly!! This is by far the best information on false lashes I have ever come across- I appreciate how you covered every little detail- it's all such useful information. I tried your way today, did all of it- step by step on the eyeliner, cutting, curling and I must say, my eyes look
A-MAAAA-ZING! I feel so girly and gorgeous today :) I really can't thank you enough.

  18. OMG! I lost all my hair when I was 14 (almost 20 years ago), and have tried numerous times to wear fake eyelashes, with no success. I am definitely going to give them a go again, now that I know how!! Thank you. Thank you. Thank you.

  19. You're a GENIUS. Good lord--I have been sweating the idea of false lashes without real lashes for "protection" (in chemo treatment and due to lose my hair by the end of the next cycle)--you have totally soothed my nerves! Also, I watched the whole video thinking, "Wow, it's so interesting that she doesn't have lashes, but she has eyebrows..." You fooled me! So then I watched your brow video and I'm so grateful I found you! Such useful and detailed information. You're amazing--thank you SO much!

  20. @littleginsu: I'm so glad this has helped you! Finally mastering false lashes was a real "lightbulb over the head" moment for me, and I hope you are as pleased as I was :)

@newsongweekly: thank you so much! You may decide that it isn't really worth taking the time to master false lashes -- they are pret-ty fiddly at first -- since your own lashes will be back in no time after chemo. BUT on the other hand if you have half a day to spare to practice, and love the "lift" that big ol' lashes give you, go for it! Feel free to post here if you have any questions :) xo

  21. Thank you so much! You are beautiful! And the lashes look natural, I had given up on falsies but maybe I'll give it a try again :)
