As you know, I may not be a frequent updater to this site as there's only so many new tips and tricks I can actually come up with, but I read every single one of your comments. So: Thanks for those!

I'm coming out of hiding as I have a new product recommendation that I am incredibly impressed with for recreating eyebrows due to hair loss from alopecia, chemotherapy, trichotillomania -- so much so that it has basically replaced my previous tried-and-trusted powder-and-pencil method for my brows. So you know it's good! It's KOJI's Dolly Wink's Liquid Eyeliner in Dark Brown and I am officially in love.

Why, you ask? For one thing, the nib is even finer than my previous favorite liner pen by Kat Von D (review and tutorial here), resulting in a super-fine, nicely convincing "hair" I can feather over a brown powder base.

Its staying power is also phenomenal, and I can put this on at 6 am, work a full day in a hot office, come back, go out, fall asleep and wake up with brows virtually intact. During the day, it's splash-proof, smudge-proof and sweat-proof. (Yes, I am forever splashing, smudging and sweating.)

As I make clear in the video, the downside of using a semi-permanent pen rather than pencil for brow recreation is the need to get it right first time (tiredness or hangover shakes be damned.) However, the lines you get from this pen are so fine and feathery that it really is hard to make a mess-up that's so significant it needs to be wiped away with a Q-Tip.

Big thanks to Thea from the BGBrows Makeup Shop -- which supports the nonprofit Bald Girls Do Lunch -- for introducing me to this product, which she now sells on her site (although it's available elsewhere online too, including Amazon.) Reminder: I don't have any kind of formal relationship with BGBrows or BDGL (ie. I'm not being paid to endorse anything they do) -- I just really like the stuff they have in their online store, including their world-beating brow lacquer. Just to be nice and clear :)

Let me know in the comments if you've tried this product. I wouldn't change up my regular brow routine of a decade for any old product, so I hope I've conveyed just how quietly life-changing this one is.
Hey folks: this is something I've been gagging to tell you all about for the last month, and I'm so thrilled I now can -- I'm featured in Vogue's incredible feature on life and style beyond hair loss!

Back-story: Vogue contacted me a few months ago about participating in this new feature -- which comprised portraits and video (links above) -- and back in April, I went out to their offices in New York to be photographed by the amazing Cass Bird and styled by their phenomenal team. The series featured a range of incredible women, from cancer patients and survivors to alopecia folks like me. Meeting all these friendly, funny people on both sides of the camera was the most incredible privilege, and I'm still on Cloud 9 frankly. They also asked me if I would do one of my video tutorials on eyebrow makeup, and you can watch it here! (Their camera is a bit fancier than my wobbly iPhone videos on this site, eh?)

I wanted to note that one of these women was 17 year-old Mia Sidaros, a lovely, vibrant aspiring fashion blogger from Los Angeles who was living with a rare form of bone cancer called Ewing’s Sarcoma. Shortly after the shoot, Mia passed away. I'm honored to have got to meet her and her family at the shoot, and the Vogue video interview is dedicated to her memory, which I think is a truly fitting tribute.

I hope to write more about all this in a little while, but in the meantime you can view all of the gorgeous black and white portraits here, watch the video tutorial here and check out the video interview here. I really hope you all like it.

Hi folks! I blog a lot here about tips, tricks and tutorials for women experiencing hair loss due to chemotherapy, alopecia (like me) or other reasons — but it's occurred to me that being the relative or friend of someone losing their hair can sometimes be tricky, too. Whether it's your daughter, your mother or your best friend, seeing someone you love going through a period of (often rapid) transition in which their appearance changes dramatically can be an awkward time, not least because you're not sure you're giving the right encouragement, or saying the right things. (Plus they probably seem angry and/or teary a lot of the time.) Well, as someone who lost their hair aged 19 and has had literally every line under the sun said to them at one point or another, I'm here to offer my personal take on what not to say to someone experiencing hair loss to help you avoid worrying about causing inadvertent upset or offence. Plus: a few things you can and definitely should say!

Please note: it is absolutely not my intention here to "pile on" to wonderful, supportive, well-meaning people who are sometimes tongue-tied or stuck for words around people experiencing hair loss. I wouldn't have had a bloody CLUE what to say to someone in this situation before I went through it myself. It's for that reason that I'm providing this list, because nobody else is going to tell you this stuff — and because the support you offer as a loved one is monumental.

PS. You can say anything to me now, by the way. I don't care. I'll be over here, eating pizza :)

"I wish I could wear headscarves/wigs too!"

People who say this are so well-meaning, because they're trying to offer a positive spin on the situation. Ultimately however, it's not helpful for someone who suddenly has to wear a headscarf or wig for whatever reason to hear this from someone with hair — who actually has a choice in the matter. At the very least, it comes off insincere. Just... steer clear.

"I'm jealous: it must take you no time at all to get ready in the morning!"
See above! Someone who's just lost their hair this would gladly trade in their alleged extra half-hour in the morning for their hair back, believe me. (And for most hair-free types, the reverse is actually true: if you use make-up to recreate eyebrows and eyelashes, this takes much longer than a "normal" make-up routine, at least initially.) The best you'll get here is a strained smile.

"Ugh, I'm having such a bad hair day"
This one is so easy to blurt out, and most people wouldn't bat an eyelid at you saying this — unless they've just lost their hair. The most mundane hair comments can cut surprisingly deeply for people in the midst of hair loss. At worst, they'll just yell "at least you have hair!" at you, and then it'll be awkward turtles all round. This kind of stuff is super-easy to say without thinking, so if you do utter it, the best remedy is to apologize immediately with the words "Ugh I am a total idiot, sorry" and breeze on through like it never happened.

"It'll come back though, right?"
Otherwise known as, 'the infuriating amateur diagnosis.' (Actually, the last person who said this to me was the lady at the DMV after I submitted my request to wear my cap in my drivers license photo. I jokingly replied, "that's news to me, love!" She... did not laugh.) Yes, many folks who lose their hair do get it back. Many don't. Regardless of what's going to happen in the future, if all you want in the world at that time is for your hair to come back, hearing Dr. Unqualified telling you what they "reckon" is going to happen with your medical condition can be a bit of a kick in the pants, to say the least — even it's coming from a good place, because they think that's what you want to hear.

"My friend tried X, and it worked for her!"
Trust me, the raw, vulnerable relative or friend in front of you does not want to hear about your acquaintance who tried yoga/steroids/guano masques/snake-oil. They're already being bombarded with Google Ads about that stuff. They're almost certainly in touch with a variety of medical professionals about the best route forward. Leave your contact out of it. Unless, of course, that contact is also a scientist who's literally just announced 100% success in a peer-reviewed clinical hair loss trial of 500 subjects: then you can give them their email!

"It's only hair."
Yes, it's only hair. But to a woman who's just lost theirs, it's never "only" hair. It will be soon — but not right now. Wait til they're the ones saying this line. Then it's an awesome mantra!

...and Three Things You Can Do

Laugh at their hair loss jokes
Using humor — often very dark humor — can feel really good for people losing their hair (or people losing anything, for that matter.) Really try to get over any awkwardness you might feel about such jokes, and laugh along with them, even if it's shocked laughter. If you feel really awkward, just say "ohhhh... you went there!" Don't leave them hanging! (Please note: do NOT attempt to make the same jokes yourself. Trust me, it will go down like a sack of you-know-what.)

Send them this Pinterest board
I made a Pinterest board of famous (and not-so-famous) women looking absolutely incredible with no hair. We live in a culture that relentlessly associates hair with femininity (and vice versa), and positive representations of women without hair can be hard to find. So there, I did it for you. Click here to see the board and send 'em the URL!

Tell them they look beautiful
...just do it. Repeatedly.

To all the fantastic friends and relatives of folks experiencing hair loss: I hope this helps! A reminder: I may not post very regularly here (EyelineHer is intended as more of a resource bank than a day-to-day blog) BUT I read every single comment you folks post here, and will do my utmost to respond to you. So if you have any questions, please feel free to shoot me a comment right here.

I am not embarrassed to admit that in the first few years after losing my hair -- to alopecia universalis, in case you’re interested -- having no hair used to regularly ruin my day. I used to obsess over the ways in which it made me look (and therefore feel) different to everybody else, and all the ways I might be "found out." So I worried about having my headwear pulled off or blown away. I worried about my false lashes falling off. I worried about water splashes ruining my drawn-on eyebrows. You name it, I worried about it. And all I can think of now about that period is what a massive waste of time that was.

It may be easy to say this now, with the benefit of hindsight, but I get annoyed (and a little sad) thinking of all the times that self-consciousness stopped me from playing with grabby young relatives, or going near water, or jumping in a convertible, or walking on a windy pier. Because now I realise that the key, really, is working out exactly what worries you, and preparing for it -- so that you don’t have to worry about it, ever. So from my years of experience, here are my five tried-and-tested tips to stop having no hair ever ruining your day:

A little waterproof sealer on your eyebrow makeup goes a long way

1. Waterproof yourself
If you know you’ll be going near or on water, a little planning ahead ensures you’ll be as comfortable and carefree as possible, and not a flinching killjoy on the sidelines like I used to be. Use waterproof sealer on eyebrow and eye makeup so it stays firm in the face of spray and splashes (click here for my video tutorial) -- or go further and use a waterproof pen liner for both brows and lash-line, for 100% confidence (tutorial here.) If water’s in the mix, forget the false lashes -- you’ll just be worrying about them coming off -- and use softly smudged eyeliner to recreate the look of 3D lashes instead (but don’t forget the sealer over it.) I also like to carry a small make-up kit with me at all times with a brow pencil and my sealer, so I can repair or re-do my brows if the situation gets a little messy.
2. Sunglasses are your friend
I used to be very self-conscious about the way my eyes looked without lashes, and became deeply attached to my “liquid liner and false lashes” combination, which I love to this day (click here for the tutorial.) This meant the idea of losing a lash or having my liner running due to watery eyes (or even tears) became a big concern. If it’s your concern too, carry a pair of sunglasses with you in your bag at all times, even in winter -- so if you lose a lash or get smeared, you can just cover up the whole crime-scene ASAP with shades. (Tip: those big “Jackie O”-style sunglasses are also great at hiding rubbed-off eyebrows. Two problems solved in one!)

3. Hairbands keep everything locked down
In a situation where your headwear might blow away or fall off? Stretchy hairbands in pretty colours are the best for slipping over whatever you’re wearing up-top, to ensure it stays put, so carry one with you. This is, incidentally, my personal tip for rollercoasters, where I wear a tight cap and not one but two headbands over it. If you don’t like headbands, try a slim scarf tied over your headwear instead, 50s-style.

Just one of the drawers in my house housing my hat collection

4. Pack a spare
I used to have a recurring nightmare about being out of my home and somehow mislaying or losing the headwear I was wearing. (Stand down Dr. Freud! This dream seems pretty obvious.) Once I started carrying a spare cap in the bottom of my bag with me always, these worries went away. My favourite cap to carry is the Kimmy by SuburbanTurban, because it's so perfectly small, and to me, it's as necessary as the spare tyre in my car.

5. Finally: make no apologies for carrying all this stuff!
If any or all of these things make you feel more comfortable in your own skin, and carrying them with you gives you reassurance and confidence: embrace them! Never feel like you’re fussing, or over preparing -- because if having this stuff with you when you’re out in town or on a night out makes you feel like you can do all of the things you used to do with hair, that’s worth it. Enjoy!
Don't get me wrong: I love my trusty everyday eyebrow technique of eyeshadow + brow pencil + sealer. If it suddenly starts raining, I'm certainly not going to panic my eyebrows are going to wash off. But for a while now, I've been looking for a way to create totally waterproof eyebrows: the kind that will withstand not just raindrops, but full-on underwater swimming. And I'm pleased to report I've found one!

(Scroll down for the video tutorial...)

The key? This nifty waterproof Tattoo Liner Pen by Kat Von D. It's a felt-tip in jet black, and once it's on it will not. Come. Off. (I mean, it does obviously, but it takes serious effort.) The nib is fine and pointy enough to be able to use it like you would a sharp pencil, and that's exactly how I use it.

Tattoo Liner by Kat Von D, a.k.a. my newest love.

This is exactly the same eyebrow technique as I've shown you in previous videos, in which I lightly feather individual "hairs" onto the brow area. (If you're unfamiliar with those, click here to take a look!) The only difference: instead of using a sharp eyebrow pencil to make these lines, I'm using this semi-permanent felt tip. It obviously creates a darker, stronger look, and it takes more concentration (because unlike using eyebrow pencil, it's a right hassle to correct any mistakes) -- but for getting beautifully waterproof brows that mean you can jump in a pool and look exactly the same when you jump out, it's so worth it.

You can also use this pen like an eyeliner, so in place of my usual liquid liner, I use this to draw on a waterproof line where my upper lashes would be and to feather on little "lower lash hairs" to finish the look. Voila: pretty-much-totally-waterproof brows and eyeliner!

(A note: as I mention in the video, I actually own two of these Kat Von D pens. That's because using it on my eyelids as an eyeliner dulls the point of the felt tip -- and using a fatter nib to feather on "eyebrow hairs" just looks too dark and Magic Marker-like. So I keep one of my pens exclusively for feathery use on my brows, which keeps the nib nice and fine. Problem solved!)Carly Shttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15180144749279794134noreply@blogger.com25tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-889134573940421812.post-90864288765103635392014-10-25T21:02:00.000-07:002014-10-25T21:02:00.841-07:00Hello there, Eyelinehers!Hello everybody! It's Carly just checking in to wave hi, in the hope you're all doing well and still finding these tips and tutorials helpful. I realize my last "proper" post was over a year ago, and wanted to reassure you that even though I haven't made a new video in a while, that's because I always wanted this site to be more of a handy resource for you all than a "my day to day thoughts" kinda blog. Rest assured I am still here to read every one of your lovely thoughtful comments!
Also, here's some answers to few FAQs:

"Can I watch your videos on YouTube?"
Yes, please do: right here! (My YouTube name is Eyelineher Blog.) You can also subscribe there, too.

"Where did you buy the little dark hat you wear under your scarf in the videos?"
This is, without a doubt, the question I get asked most on this blog. (I actually make it clear in my blogs where my products come from, but I totally understand it's easy to miss something.) It's a Kimmy from the wonderful online retailer Suburban Turban. That's me modelling the cap on their site, but that's because their founder and all-round hat-wizard Nicky Zip became a dear friend after I met her through cancer care work. I don't get paid for plugging her products, promise -- I just really love them.

"There's a particular technique or problem I'm having. How can I get advice?"
Just comment right here on the site, on any post! I read every comment and reply wherever humanly possible.

"Have you discovered any good products or techniques in the past year?"
Not as many as you'd think. I am still totally wedded to my eyebrow techniques and products (any eyeshadow powder + Rimmel eyebrow pencil + BGDL Sealer.) The BGDL Sealer is still the most amazing I have tried, and I urge you all to order one from the kindly Thea at BGDL (they do online orders!) I will never be parted from my Suburban Turban hats, so take a look at their stuff and email Nicky with your questions. My only real discovery is the Kat Von D Tattoo Liner, which I now use to recreate 100% waterproof eyebrows if I'm doing something really wet, like swimming or kayaking. If this sounds interesting to anybody, I'll do a new tutorial on it!

My best to you all!
If you're not familiar with an infinity scarf (sometime also called a circle scarf, or a tube scarf), they are loops of stretchy cotton primarily designed to be worn around your neck, but why let that stop you making a BRILLIANT headscarf out of one? As I explain in the vid, these types of scarves are very common on the High Street, where they're also pretty cheap — here in the US, Forever 21 and H&M are my primary hunting grounds. -- UPDATE: I just found a bunch of perfectly-stretchy infinity scarves in lovely colors in my local Whole Foods, of all places! They were Limited-Edition Zero Waste Infinity Scarves by Yellow 108 at $24,99 -- I can't for the life of me find a link for buying online, but I'll keep you posted. --

Enjoy the video, and let me know what you think in the comments! C xo
Summer's pretty much here, so I've emerged from my blog hibernation to send my best wishes to you all AND share a couple of summery tips with you.
As lovely as warmer weather is, for us it also heralds the arrival of something even more annoying than wasps at your summer picnic — and that is shiny eyebrows. Heat and humidity are irritating enough when they transform your face into an oil slick, but when they start to affect your painstakingly-drawn brows and make them look unrealistically shiny (or even threaten to make them slide off), it's enough to make you stay indoors in front of an industrial-strength fan until the leaves start falling. I've written about this product before, but it's just fantastic. (No, I don't work for them.) It's so good at keeping your drawn-on eyebrows on your face that I have long since forgotten how upset I was at Benefit Cosmetics discontinuing my previous sealer-of-choice She-Laq.

Where it really beats all the other sealers out there, however, is the lack of shine it dries with — after applying it over your eyebrow makeup you're left with a pleasingly matte finish that gives an extra-realistic touch to your new brows. I should also mention that you can now buy this product online on the Makeup Shop section of the Bald Girls Do Lunch website, which is awesome!

Of course, even products as heroic as this cannot work miracles, and there's no sealer in the world which can stay 100% shine-free in the face of Californian heat (or even just one's own natural oily tendencies in the T-Zone.) Which is why you also need:

2. Oil-absorbing blotting sheets

If you're dismayed by how shiny your eyebrow makeup looks a few hours after application, simply press one of these oil-absorbing blotting sheets carefully over the eyebrow region and lift it gently away. Voila: the grease is gone!

Note: you're not rubbing or wiping your eyebrow with the sheet (this will smear your beautifully-applied work.) Rather, you're pressing it onto the area — and if you do this right, you won't lift away any of the makeup at all, I promise. The technique I like to employ for optimum oil removal is pressing a sheet onto one eyebrow and holding it in place at one end with my left hand, while gently sweeping two fingers on my right hand across the sheet and across the eyebrow. This way, you're soaking up the oil from the skin whilst not disturbing the make-up under the sheet at all, because you're not applying any friction to it. Perfect! (This, by the way, is a great way of removing oil all over your face.)

There are a lot of oil absorbing sheets out there in the chemist's/drugstore, the best probably being Clean and Clear's lovely, powdery sheets. I do have a slightly weird confession though: whilst they aren't common in the UK, you know those toilet seat cover sheets you'll find in a little dispenser in pretty much any US restroom?

They are amazing at absorbing oil, and you can tear off as much as you need. They are also FREE, and come on; it's not like you're grabbing a used one! Stop looking at me like that! If you're in a bind, or just really object to the toilet seat cover thing, a sheet of toilet paper or tissue is also pretty good at blotting shine from your brows too.

Enjoy your shine-free summer! Love, Carly.

Just wanted to let you know that even though I haven't updated this blog in a while, I have not abandoned it - in fact, I am checking it regularly and see every one of the the lovely comments and questions you guys post. The reason I don't update it frequently is because I wanted this blog to be a helpful resource of photos, videos and tutorials, rather than one of those 'day-to-day thoughts' kind of blogs (goodness knows there's enough of them out there...), and I feel like this site and my YouTube channel now have most of your bases covered.

If you have any questions about the tutorials or specific products, or even have an idea for a new tutorial that you'd like to see, as always please feel free to leave a comment or message me a bit more privately via my YouTube channel. I love to hear from you all!

Keep on lining, lashing and scarf-tying, everybody :)
For the uninitiated, a Buff is a soft, seamless cotton tube that covers the head like a cap - you just slide it onto your head and you're done. (Particularly nice to have to hand when you're relaxing 'au naturel' at home and the postman knocks at the door...)

There are a number of ways to wear your Buff, which this brief video introduces!

PS. Buffs are available in selected outdoors shops and online - here's their UK and US sites to get you started...Carly Shttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15180144749279794134noreply@blogger.com13tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-889134573940421812.post-39622358549153424022011-06-02T19:53:00.000-07:002011-06-06T18:15:01.774-07:00The easiest way to tie a headscarf - without knots! This is my absolute favourite way of tying a scarf - by using a stretchy hairband instead of tying any knots. With a little practice, you'll be able to do this one with your eyes closed. It might sounds strange but trust me: it works!
So I couldn't resist naming this post after the three words I nearly always hear when I'm wearing headwear from one particular company: Suburban Turban.

In the interests of full disclosure, I should say I'm fortunate enough to now know their supremely talented head honcho Nicky, who's become a dear friend of mine through her work in UK hospitals*. But really, these hand-finished caps, hats and scarves speak for themselves.

Especially designed with 'us' in mind, there's a distinct 1920s/30s vibe to these pieces, and the materials are beautifully soft and comfy. Best of all, from my own standpoint, they provide the kind of head coverage we need: no more tugging your cap down to give the nape of your neck some warmth. There's a large range of designs that definitely suit different ages, but for me, the winning style is this 20s-esque cap in three different shades. It's a veritable compliment-magnet!

(* That's also my grinning mug you can see on the site. Nicky likes her models to be drawn from the 'hair-free community' and is always looking for ladies to smile for her camera in the Surrey, UK area. If you're in her area and fancy a go, hit her up!)

A short word on sizing: you'll find a handy how-to on the Suburban Turban site on the importance of hat sizing, which is a key lesson regardless of where you buy your headwear. So often I've tried on a 'non-specialised' hat in a shop only to find what looked fab on the plastic head looks ridiculous on mine. It took a while to realise that it's not always a matter of a bad hat (or bad head, for that matter), but merely a too-small or too-big one. So ladies: get measuring and refuse to settle for a wrong-sized hat.

First, I must kick off with an apology for the radio silence - I have been moving my life's possessions across the globe! EyelineHer is now based out of the California Bay Area, so this means that I'll most likely be covering a lot more US products from now on. However, fear not UK ladies: I will endeavour also to give prices in GBP, as well as mentioning your shipping options.

So, let's kick off the invasion with a new brow sealer product review!
Part of their 'Signature Brow Range', which also includes brow powder and a special slanted brush, this sealer is only available from them by mail order (apparently they're working on an online marketplace right now, which I'll keep my eye on.) So, unlike pretty much every other sealer product out there, this one is custom designed to suit 'our' needs - but does it cut the mustard?

Price: $25 for a full-size bottle (c.£15), $15 for a travel size (pictured - c.£9). I'm told that all proceeds from sales go back into the organisation to fund their support programs for women with alopecia - which can only be a good thing.

Availability: [UPDATED] This little baby is now available online, hurrah! You can buy direct from BGDL on the Makeup Shop section of their website. You can apparently also still make your order from info@baldgirlsdolunch.org or by calling the call the BGDL office with an order toll free at 800-578-5332 (UK ladies: you'll need to add 001 on front of that number). US shipping costs $7, and they'll ship overseas too (extra charges of course).

Application: This sealer comes in a little bottle with a brush built into the lid (handy), so application is quick and easy. The liquid brushes over brows easily, with minimal smudging of colour.

Feel: All good - I experienced no stiffness, sting or irritation.

Staying power: I have to be honest and say that it didn't hold up as well against the 'rub-test' as other products. However, this kind of test is at the extreme end of the spectrum, and normal daily wear was absolutely fine - no flaking or smearing at all.

Shine test: This is where this sealer really comes into its own. For me, the megawatt shininess that comes with lacquering my faux-brows on is the one thing that annoys me. Not only can shiny brows make naturally oily skin look plain ol' greasy, they also work against the whole natural (ie. matte) brow look I'm trying to achieve, and dabbing powder over them can just cause the colours to mottle. So I'm delighted to report that this sealer results in a genuinely flat matte look, which makes faux-brows look even more realistic. What's more, it reacts very well to added powder, with no deterioration of the brow design. I have to admit my initial scepticism about a product being able to deliver zero shine, but on this score, this sealer is fantastic. Kudos, BGDL!

Sleep test: eyebrows sealed at noon (what can I say, it was a duvet day) and slept in overnight. All present and correct in the morning with very little brow loss.

Overall judgement: the total lack of shine, in addition to some impressive staying power, makes this sealer a total winner. I must confess to being initially worried when I found I could rub the entire sealed brow off with ferocious effort, but the fact that normal wear and tear throughout the day (not to mention sleepytime) did not affect my brows at all makes up for this almost entirely. At the moment, this product is selling almost entirely through word-of-mouth and BGDL's events, but when online purchasing is enabled this product will be near-perfect. If you hate shiny brows, this is the one.Carly Shttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15180144749279794134noreply@blogger.com32tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-889134573940421812.post-55174475056406429842011-02-13T06:10:00.005-08:002011-05-10T08:31:20.086-07:00Bad news and good news

First, the bad news: the saviour of faux-eyebrows, Benefit's She Laq, is being discontinued.

As a long-time devotee of this product, which lacquers drawn-on eyebrows into place for over 24 hours, I'm gutted. (The decision, by the way, has been confirmed by their UK head office, although I'm afraid I don't know how widespread the discontinuation is.) This wonder bottle was the product that first reassured me of the power of cosmetics and beauty products to recreate what I'd lost facially, and I know that many other hair-free ladies feel the same way.

Which, in the spirit of indefatigable optimism, leads me to the good news: I have realised it makes poor sense to put all your eggs into one lacquer bottle, and to rely absolutely on a single product. Cosmetics companies are businesses like all the others, and, as frustrating as it is for those who love them, certain products do get withdrawn from sale. So, in between panic-buying my local department store's She Laq reserves and hoarding them in my underwear drawer, I have decided to embark on a mission to road-test all the alternatives I didn't even know were out there, for your lacquering and sealing pleasure. Testing will be fair and rigorous, judging products on a range of consistent criteria. First into the fire is a new one on my radar:

Application: A lot less simple than She Laq, which has a little brush built-in to the bottle's lid - but, to be fair, that's because Weather Everything is primarily designed to be mixed with eyeliner itself in the little containers and then applied - not painted over (as I will be doing). The sealer comes in the form of a squeezy plastic bottle with a droplet cap, and no brushes are included. To apply, I squeezed a little into the container provided, and dipped a little brush into it, which I then painted over my faux-brows. No running or smudging of colour occurred - good stuff.

Feel: good - no stiffness or irritation for me.

Staying power: passed the 'rub-test' (in which I ferociously rub the sealed eyebrows) extremely well. Left to its own devices, this kept my eyebrows in place beautifully, with no discernible deterioration in appearance, even after a day.

Sleep test: eyebrows sealed at 8.30am Monday morning, and slept in Monday night. Woke up Tuesday morning, and they were still there. Thumbs up.

Overall judgement: as a sealer, Weather Everything is brilliant, and very well-priced. Not having a built-in brush is a drawback, but then that's not what the product was originally designed for, so it seems mean to judge it harshly on this issue. Easily as good as She Laq on the sealing and longevity front. It might run out more quickly due to the potentially wasteful application method, but it's reasonably priced, so I can't complain too much there.

This is, it's fair to say, a most excellent start in the quest for the best eyebrow sealer out there. They take ages to get the hang of, are super-fiddly, and take a superhuman measure of patience. Falsies are designed to cling to pre-existing lashes, so getting them to stay put with no natural lashes there is a real test of will. (Are you feeling disheartened yet?!)

BUT: once you get the hang of it, you’ve got it for life, and it’s like having your old eyelashes back - which, it goes without saying, feels pretty great.

(If any chemo patients are reading this, I'd recommend you stop here: for the length of time it’ll take you working how to get the darn things to stay on, your old eyelashes will have grown back. It’s not worth the hassle, seriously.)

Step 1: prepare your base

For a ultra-realistic look, you'll need to apply liner with a smudged smoky edge as outlined in this earlier post.

Step 2: cut your falsies

Needed: good-quality realistic false lashes (pictures: Ardell Fashion Lashes in 'Luckies')

The world-beating secret to applying and wearing false lashes is: start with half-lashes. By this, I mean buy a set of lashes, and cut them in half.

The reason most lash-free ladies’ first attempts at falsies (including mine, may I add) fail miserably is that they are just too long. They literally don't fit your eyelid. But: if you start with short, manageable ‘mini-lashes’ applied to the outer corners of the eyes, and slowly work your way up to longer and longer sets, then voila!

You want to buy well-made falsies which are reasonably thick and not ridiculously long. My absolute favourite brand is Ardell real human hair lashes, their Luckies style in particular, which are well priced (around £5 last time I checked) and widely available in Boots.

Remove the lashes from the pack and cut each lash in half. Discard the outer half of each - you’ll be using the inner half. (Most lashes, unless they’re designed to look purposely artificial, start short at the inner corners and get much longer as they move outwards.)
Combat this by firmly clamping your half-lashes in an eyelash curler for a few seconds, so that they curl upwards far more - this may seem a small step, but is really quite important. (A note on eyelash curlers: since you're not curling them on your face, I actually prefer this compact kind of curler, as it's easier to control and you can curl one section of the lash at a time.)
Step 4: apply the glue

Needed: good quality eyelash glue (pictures: Duo Adhesive)

Please please please don't bother with the stuff that comes with the lashes - all too often, it's just no good.

My number one eyelash glue is Duo Adhesive which is available from MAC stores. It’s pricey (around £10), but totally worth it.

Apply a thin band of the glue to the lash strip - not too much, not too little. Try and apply it to the top and side of the strip, not the underside. Let it dry for about half a minute - this is important, otherwise the lash won't hold on your eye.

Slowly and carefully, move it straight towards your eyelid until the strip connects with the outer half of your eyelid. Don't place the strip too close to the edge of the lid or you'll get glue in your eye. (This is where the nice thick sweep of liner you've already applied comes in: it essentially hides 'the join'.)

Taking care not to blink suddenly (keeping your eye relaxed, even half closed helps), keep holding the lash on your eyelid, applying slight pressure so you’re basically pushing it onto the lid. Make sure you’ve angled it so that the lashes are nicely fanning upwards, not drooping downwards. (Some people advise you use tweezers for this, but I don’t think you can apply the necessary pressure across the lid using them.)

After about a minute, gently take your hand away - and there you go.

At least, that's the theory - but I'm almost certain that by this time, you will have either got glue in your eye, lost the eyelash, or had it fall off at the last moment. You’ll also be paranoid about them then falling off within half an hour, which they inevitably will the first few times you try. (This is why you'll want to carry your glue around with you in your bag when you go out, for quick touch-up jobs). However, practice makes perfect, and after a while, it'll be a breeze - plus your lashes will look fantastic.

You probably won't want to extend all the way to the inner corner of your eye, as the lashes will keep jabbing the corner, making you tear up - and tears and eyelash glue do not mix. (By the way, if like me you are one of those people who gets instantly teary eyes in the wind or cold, make sure not to let your lashes extend all the way to the outer corner of your eye, as this is where the teardrops collect, and they'll melt your glue. However, on closer inspection it does subtly change the appearance of your eyes, as even the most fair-haired eyelashes lend a certain framing to the eyes, and seeing them without that framing is a real surprise. You can feel your eyes look smaller - on down days, even a bit 'beady'. So: what you need to is to paint that framing back on.

This first guide is a how-to that recreates the look of eyelashes without false eyelashes. I'll cover falsies in a later post, but for ladies who are experiencing temporary eyelash loss (for example, women undergoing chemo), the make-up-only route is best. False lashes are a fiddly pain to apply, and by the time you've got the hang of it, your real lashes will have grown back, so they're really a more long-term solution.

Step 1: clear the decks

Make sure you start with a clean, dry skin surface, as this ensures the make-up you then apply stays put all day. Your best bet: gently patting a little translucent powder over your eyelid.

Step 2: eyeliner, eyeliner, eyeliner

Needed: Good-quality liquid eyeliner (pictures: Exaggerate eyeliner by Rimmel London)

A nice 1950s-style sweep of eyeliner along the lashline of your upper eyelid will frame your eye and give the illusion of lashes being there. Unless they’re incredibly close to your face, no-one will be able to tell there aren’t actually any lashes there.

Liquid eyeliner has an unfair reputation as being nigh-on impossible to apply, but it's really not. You just need to use a product with the right-sized nib: not too hard, not too soft and the right thickness. (Avoid the ones with the really thin, one-hair-thick brush, as they're too tricky to control.) Hands-down, the best one I've ever found is the Rimmel London Exaggerate liner pictured: it stays on all day, doesn't crumble, and has the perfect nib!

To apply, gently pull the skin of your eyelid taut with one hand, and starting from the inner corner of the eye, slowly paint along the lashline with the other. Rather than trying to do it in one neat sweep, just do the line in stages.

To really open your eyes up, go a little beyond the edge of your eye, and add a little flick at the corner. (Cautionary visual note: resist the temptation to go overboard with this one...). If your line goes a little wobby, it can be easily rectified with a wet cotton bud.

(NB: If you find liquid liner just impossible to apply, you can use a kohl eyeliner - or even black eyeshadow - instead, dabbed on precisely along the lashline with a little brush or a cotton bud.)

Step 3: smudging and softening

Needed: black or brown eyeshadow (pictures: Rimmel London Mono shadow in Black)
white or pearly eyeliner (pictures: Benefit Eye Bright)

For extra naturalness, you want to keep your line soft. Using a small brush or cotton bud, smudge a little black eyeshadow along the top edge of the liquid liner to soften the line.

Now, the finishing touch: smudging in 'bottom lashes'. To do this, I like to first run a white or pearly eyeliner along the inside of my bottom eyelid - this widens the eye.

Then, I dab a little black eyeshadow under that, to replicate the look of lashes.

And there you go! Unless anyone gets truly up-close, or looks at your eyes from the side, nobody will be able to tell that you're lash-free.
[UPDATED: with new links!]

To accompany the video guide I recently posted on how to draw eyebrows back on, I thought I'd give you a step-by-step photo guide as well.

This simple powder-and-pencil technique works whether you're simply filling in missing parts of the brow, or drawing new ones on totally from scratch. Rather than simply pencilling on a flat, thin line, the aim is to create a 3d-looking brow that'll fool anyone into thinking you never lost yours in the first place.

Step 1: Shading the shape with powder
Needed: Eyeshadow in black and brown (pictures: Rimmel London Mono shadows)

Make sure you start off with a nice dry skin surface - if you've just put moisturiser on, wipe off the excess so that the make-up you apply doesn't just slide straight off. If necessary (and I would recommend this), pat a little translucent powder over the eyebrow area.

Using a small slanted cosmetics brush (or failing that, a cotton bud / Q-tip), softly feather on the shape on an eyebrow on the brow area, using black and brown eyeshadows. It's best to use a combination of these two colours, as too often black looks way too harsh, and brown powders tend to come out a bit too 'terracotta' coloured, which on 90% of people looks fake.

Obviously if you haven't lost all of your brows, this will be much easier as you'll have a vague guide of where to draw. If, like me, you're 'starting from scratch', it'll take a little more practice. You can buy stencils for this, but I think you get a more natural shape if you just start lightly and softly. Any mistakes can simply be wiped away! Give the shape a nice soft arch, and don't extend too far into the centre of your brow.

Step 2: Feathering in hairs with pencil

For this you want an eyebrow pencil, because they are very hard and non-smudgy. You definitely do not want a kohl eyeliner pencil, as they are designed to be soft and smudgy, which is not the look we're going for.

Sharpen your pencil to a very fine point - as sharp as you can. (As an aside, many cosmetics sharpeners are pretty terrible, so I often use a standard drawing pencil sharpener or this great one from Bourjois, although it's UK only unfortunately. If your pencil keeps crumbling, it's probably too warm, so try leaving it in the fridge beforehand.)

Then very gently feather in little lines over the top of the powder eyebrows you've just drawn on, so that they look like real eyebrow hairs. (Feather the lines away from the direction of your nose, so that you're drawing them outwards.)

Don't worry about them looking perfect - real brows aren't perfect, so yours shouldn't be either. Steadying your hand by resting your elbow on something often helps at this point!

Now that you've drawn your masterworks on, it'd be a pain if they melted off in two hours time. This is where sealant comes in - to be precise, She-Laq by Benefit. This product , which looks a little like watery clear nail varnish, is pricey (given the size) yet worth its weight in gold for the bang-up job it does keeping make-up in its place. [UPDATE: She-Laq is no longer! But don't worry, Bald Girls Do Lunch's sealer is even better. Go grab it!]

Using the little brush in its lid, gently paint the lacquer over the brows you've drawn - it won't smudge the design. The liquid will then dry clear over the brows, making them water-proof, sweat-proof and (within reason) smudge-proof.

One tiny downside: lacquer does make your eyebrows slightly shiny (and this does tend to show up in photos). If this bothers you, just brush a little translucent powder over them to reduce the shine.

Treated well, they'll then last for around 24 hours - you can even sleep in them - and can just be washed or wiped off when you want to bid them adios. Job done!

(NB. If you still have quite a lot of your eyebrows remaining, go easy on the lacquer: it'll harden on any hairs and make them brittle, which, considering you're probably trying to conserve them at this point, isn't exactly desirable...)Carly Shttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15180144749279794134noreply@blogger.com35tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-889134573940421812.post-30210385555738619982011-01-19T11:50:00.001-08:002011-02-13T06:18:11.811-08:00Eyebrow, you brow...My first post on EyelineHer, so I thought I'd better make it a good one! And where better to start than eyebrows?

Losing eyebrows, whether totally or partially, is for many just as big a deal as losing their hair, and it's not hard to see why. Eyebrows provide some key structure to your face, and unless you've fallen victim to a 'hilarious' shaving prank in the past, you won't have ever imagined yourself without them. So why not draw the little deserters right back on?

For a realistic look, the absolute key is a combination of powder and pencil (as opposed to just pencil, as many women use). Done right, faux-brows will look almost as good as the real thing, and will stay put for pretty much 24 hours. This video explains how - enjoy!
